Why Can Healing Feel So Elusive?

The trauma may have taken moments compared to the years you have lived in its aftermath.

That is one of the difficult realities of trauma.

It can change the direction of your life. It can affect how you see yourself, how you see others, how you experience relationships and even how you see the world around you.

Your nervous system is designed to protect you. When you experience trauma, it may respond through fight, flight, freeze or fawn. These responses helped you survive something that overwhelmed your ability to process what was happening at the time.

But the traumatic event can end while your nervous system continues trying to protect you.

You may know intellectually that you are safe and still not feel safe in your body.

You may find yourself reacting rather than responding. A tone of voice, disagreement, feeling rejected, a memory or something you cannot even identify may cause a response that feels bigger than what is happening in the present moment.

Your body learned survival.

Healing involves helping it learn safety.

As you begin to process trauma and experience more safety, your nervous system can begin to regulate. Your window of tolerance can widen. You start developing more space between what happens to you and how you respond.

You begin to notice.

What am I feeling?

Why did that affect me?

What is happening in my body?

Am I responding to this moment or something from my past?

That pause may seem small, but it can change so much.

You become more aware.

More present.

More able to respond instead of simply react.

The Grief of Lost Time

Healing can also bring an unexpected grief.

You begin to see how trauma affected your life.

The years spent surviving.

The relationships.

The choices.

The fear.

The anger.

The shame.

The ways you learned to cope before you understood what you were coping with.

That sense of lost time can weigh heavily on you.

There were things that happened to you that never should have happened.

There were things you carried that were never yours to carry.

You cannot go back and change them.

But healing can change their relationship to your present.

Your past does not have to continue deciding your future.

Learning Safety

Understanding trauma is important.

Learning the language can finally help you make sense of things you may have struggled to understand for years.

But intellectual understanding alone does not teach your nervous system that you are safe.

Safety is something you begin to experience.

You learn what helps your body settle.

You learn to recognize your triggers.

You learn boundaries.

You learn what relationships feel safe and which ones do not.

You learn how to listen to your body instead of constantly fighting against it.

You begin to experience emotions without always being overtaken by them.

Little by little, your capacity for life grows.

You Can Heal

Healing does not mean forgetting what happened.

It does not mean pretending it did not affect you.

It does not mean making peace with someone who harmed you.

It means processing what happened so that it does not continue controlling your life in the same way.

You can heal.

You can process what never should have happened and what was never yours to carry.

Life can become better.

It can become fuller.

You can begin to live a life where you are increasingly present instead of constantly surviving something that happened in the past.

And it starts with you.

Maybe it begins as a feeling that there has to be something more than this.

Then curiosity begins to grow.

You start asking questions.

Why do I respond this way?

Why do I feel this in my body?

Why does this keep happening?

What happened to me?

And eventually you may find yourself asking one of the most important questions of your healing journey.

How do I heal?

There may not be one answer.

Your healing will be your own.

But asking the question is a beginning.
